Plantation Management – Regulation and Planning
Northern Territory
Legislation
Northern Territory legislation in practice
The Department of Regional Development, Primary Industry, Fisheries and Resources includes an agro forestry unit supporting small scale growers, and also acts as the first point of contact for investors in the Territory.
Through the Department, the NT has developed an approved Code of Practice for Plantation Forestry which allows for export of raw non-value added product without special consideration from the Commonwealth. This has been signed off by both the Australian Government and NT Government Ministers. Planning approvals are centrally controlled in the Territory under the Planning Act 2009.
The Act controls the clearing of native vegetation through the Clearing of Native Vegetation development provisions 2004. Applications are subject to a public exhibition period and peer review by government agencies.
Further information on native vegetation issues are available in the Information for Prospective Investors in Agricultural Developments in the Northern Territory (PDF)
This booklet explains to prospective developers and investors, land owners, and anyone else potentially involved in the process of agricultural developments, which government agencies provide what types of information and the application/approval processes and licences required to operate in the NT.
It includes the information prospective developers and investors need to provide when consulting with government on a prospective investment opportunity, where to source this information, the relevant authorisations and approvals required (including which legislation is relevant to various development proposals), contact details for, and specific information about the services provided by each government agency, on-line resources and links to other useful information.
