Plantations in Australia
Maps
Most of Australia’s forestry plantations are in the ‘plantation’ regions indicated on the map below. Click on your area of interest to access a map for your plantation region that will show your local government area names and boundaries, hardwood and softwood plantations, major roads and towns and plantation wood processing plants.
These maps have been compiled by the Bureau of Rural Science using plantation area data that is current at December 2005. NB Areas of farm forestry plantings are not included on these maps.
Regional profiles detailing plantation areas for each of these regions are detailed in Australia’s Plantations 2006 (pdf).
Plantation companies are usually well resourced with data and mapping systems and would welcome opportunities to assist local government with their mapping needs.
To create your own maps you can access the Plantation Information Network online. This site provides comprehensive information on which land is suitable for commercial timber plantations in Australia and lots of other useful information. Go to www.brs.gov.au/plantations.
The Bureau of Rural Science compile plantation spatial or mapped data on a five yearly basis and are willing to discuss supplying plantation area datasets for local government areas suitable for use in GIS systems. Contact: nfi.info@brs.gov.au
